Its time for a BIG post ! Why? No special reason except that I have completed my first month in HeyMath! as a software developer and got my first pay today. So here i go with all the stuff that happened over the last 30 days. Don’t get bored, you wont get this kind of a post until June 1, 2008 when i will be writing my “End of Year One” post :-)

I have learned loads of new technical stuff and thats the best part of the last 30 days. This includes Apache Tomcat, JSP, XML, FreeMarker, Ajax, SVN, Cookies and Sessions.. Wait!! I just grazed through these terms and technologies and have not mastered them, just not yet.. Foosball games (I mostly watch!!), some happy moments, some desperate moments (what else but bugs can cause them ?) and some good food (though the biscuits are always salty!) are all part of June 2007.

Not emotional or something but I use this post to thank all my friends who encouraged me (and still do) to achieve more in life ! And Special Thanks to Rajiv for introducing me to Eclipse which in turn made me learn Java easily !!! All said and done, the journey had just now begun and there is still a longggg way to go…

And I must not forget to mention the Pun of the Month - “Eval ah ivvala” :)

I have been expecting this to happen for months now !!! Waiting, waiting and more waiting….. And Sachin finally got his 15000 today and in what style !! It does not matter to me that he missed yet another ton today :( A slow and steady 99 and a blazing 93, enough to shut the mouths of critics who were baying for his blood after he got out cheaply against Ireland !!

I cant understand people complaining that Sachin is on the wane. True, he is not at his blazing best whenever he walks on to the field nowadays. But jus have a look at these stats: Its 6 years (when he blew away the Oz with his 28th ODI ton) now since he got his 10000th ODI run. At that time he had 28 tons in 12 years of ODI cricket. In the next 6 years he had got himself 13 more tons. Thats that..

  1. First 12 Years - 28 centuries - 10000 runs
  2. Next 6 Years - 13 centuries - 5000 runs

Now tell me, is Sachin on the wane ?!?! I dont think so.. Still Doubting ? Read this!!

Never before in his 137 Tests and 385 one-dayers had it happened !! Tendulkar fell for 99 in the ODI vs SA today.. I never knew this stat of the Master !! And meanwhile, the comedy called Test matches vs Bangladesh continues and now even Vaas has got a test century in his kitty..

Any guess what these words are doing in my blog ??

  1. folksonomy
  2. blogosphere
  3. blog
  4. netiquette
  5. blook
  6. webinar
  7. vlog
  8. social networking
  9. cookie
  10. wiki

I have decided earlier against writing anything technical in my blog but this certainly amused me enough to deserve a post !!

Apart from being related to the www monster, what else do these words have in common ? Well, they have been voted The Web’s Ten Most Irritating Words in that order !!! Personally though, I dont like blog and wiki finding a place in that list :)

This Irish guy had just now achieved something that bowlers all over the world dream of, when they start their international cricketing career !! Yes, He got Sachin BOWLED in his very first over on debut, especially after the Master hit him for a four in the previous delivery.. The Indian innings is only 7.3 overs old now and Roger might very well end up on the losing side but he had got a debut wicket that he ll cherish forever in his life !!

P.S. : I did not notice earlier that Roger was stumped by Sachin giving him his only wicket in the match !!

We had a foodfest at office today where some ppl bring food for all of us :) But the real fun started only after that - when all of us had some great time singing, dancing….

I was hit hard by a silly bug today and wasted my entire day in resolving it, to say the least !! But the result as usual was good !!

Update: The result being good actually turned out to be a premature conclusion :(

“Premature Optimization is the Root of All Evil” — I never knew this quote by Donald Knuth until recently when Satya (@ HeyMath!) told me this !! And today, I realised the meaning of this statement and I have to accept this one !! I was coding a program to do DFS on a not so straightforward input. I tried to do it in an elegant manner and ended up with a wrong solution. Thats when this quote struck me in my head. So, scrap the work, start afresh !! Then did a straightforward coding of what is required and it came out pretty good actually, though I am not much sure of the time complexity, yet.

9 months to get to a 1000 and another 20 days for the next 500 !! Oh! I m talking about my blog hits :))

I am very happy but there is not much to say about it really !! May be I will substantiate this some time in the future !! But of course, all this is preceded by a few hours of fighting with some 100 odd lines of jsp code that i wrote !!

So, how to begin the story of my first week at Heymath! ? Ya, I know it. I m not going to tell :) C’mon I can’t go out telling wat I am doing there, can I ??? What i can tell is that i have found out a whole lot of new friends..

But certainly, i paused more than once in the last few days to think abt our learning process and the whole educational system (which i often complain about). Do we learn or study? I think the latter is the majority. Despite this if Indians are bright enough to teach Maths to the world (read US) !!! we must be proud, yaar !!

And to wind up things, these are some really cool posts that i hit upon when i was tag-surfing here….

[UPDATE: I received a personal complaint from a reader that I have not named these new friends. So here we go - Ananth, Satya, Prashant Shukla, Manu, Ravi, Prashant, VC(the "smart" reader who complained), etc etc. And to the complainant, dont ask me to extend those etceteras !!]

I never knew work can be so much of fun !! Oh, yes ! I could be mistaken ! But my first day at office was simply COOL ! Idle for the first half of the day, sort of busy for the next half, party at the evening ! Not a bad start, eh !!

P.S. Do you know that the M in McDonald’s logo contains 4 parabolas ?

Hurray ! I am no more a college student ! I joined work today at HeyMath! Hoping for a great start to my career !
